Echoes

There are those that believe that there are no such thing as new thoughts and new ideas, we are all simply just reusing the same techniques.  I would challenge those individuals to question the definition of new when it comes to art, whether it be literature, film, or music.  I find that especially in literature and music, the nuances that artist add to these art forms create a new piece entirely.  The reasoning behind this conclusion is based in my love for music.  Specifically, my fascination with Hip Hop and how it in itself is an echo of the past.  I remember being seven years old listening to Lenny Williams 'Cause I love you' and then eight years later hearing rappers like Twista reinvent this song for a new generation creating his own personal echo.  I say an echo because while an echo is in some way a reflection of its original source it also takes on some characteristic of the world around it; an echo in a cave is different from an echo from a mountain top or in an empty hallway.

The same can be said for literature, we are constantly creating echos of the same tales and finding ways to place ourselves in these pieces in order to make them more than a copy.

Create echos with your writing just as music does with its rhythms.
